As little as 10 years ago, the technologies needed to harvest geothermal power were simply not mature enough. But these technologies have been advancing rapidly in recent years. The technologies that Geothermal Technologies will leverage in its innovative approach to harvesting geothermal energy are now ready to support our unique approach. Today, when the need for renewable energy is critical, Geothermal Technologies is poised to deliver it.
All of the activity in the oil & gas sector in recent years (Marcellus, Bakken, Prudhoe Bay, Permian Basin, etc.) has resulted in wholesale improvements in drilling techniques and economics. Oil companies commonly have to drill three-dimensional wells extending over several kilometers to reach new reservoirs. In addition, precise steering control is required during drilling to maximize reservoir contact and to avoid hitting existing wells. Today’s drilling precision is incredible. This same precision will be leveraged by Geothermal Technologies in drilling our geothermal wells.
Like drilling, advancements in imaging technologies have been rapid. Tomographic Fracture Imaging techniques will allow Geothermal Technologies to collect, process, and analyze passive seismic data to identify activity in the subsurface related to active fractures and active fluid volumes. The identification of active fractures and volumes will facilitate the accurate targeting of new injection and production wells as well as the optimal placement and spacing of horizontal wellbores.
Hydrofracking, while effective, results in many environmental and geological problems. Geothermal Technologies is developing novel non-hydrofracking techniques to optimize the subterranean permeability of its geothermal system. We will sculpt the area around our wellbores to provide the enhanced permeability necessary to provide the flow of heat needed to run our above ground geothermal power plant.
