Houston, Texas.

Bill Chmela, Program Director for Geothermal Technologies, Inc. (GTI) was invited to speak about the future of Geothermal for power generation at AKM Enterprises 3rd Annual Ignite Summit at Brennan’s of Houston on March 2nd 2023.

The Annual Ignite Summit is where important conversations take place exclusively between over 100 E&P executives, drilling engineers, and executives of AKM ‘s clients together with over 20 other US land E&P operators.  The 3rd Annual Ignite Summit was packed with incredible no-fluff content and epic sessions from the best in the business, to avoid the big mistakes, to strengthen ties, to do better.

This year the summit hosted over 24+ E&P teams and featured speakers and sessions from Occidental Petroleum. Marathon Oil, Southwestern Energy. Chord Energy, XCL Resources, and several Startups from Silicon Valley.

Bill was part of “The future of Energy is Now” sessions and shared the potential of combining advances in Organic Rankine Cycle power generators with proprietary technologies for power production targeting hot sedimentary aquifers.   There is an abundance of hot sedimentary aquifers with temperatures suitable for electricity generation scattered across the globe; and very often in areas routinely explored for oil and gas. Commercial electricity generation at these lower temperatures requires high flow rates.  To get these high flow rates without damaging the formation the pressure drop must be distributed over a large area; and this distribution of pressure can be accomplished with horizontal wells in formations with the right reservoir parameters.  Fortunately, the cost of drilling long lateral wells has come down to a level that makes geothermal in hot sedimentary rocks affordable.

Bill explained how GTI has designed a patented system (GenaSys™) and methodology for production and reinjection of geothermal fluids in hot sedimentary aquifers using new exploration techniques together with sophisticated forward modeling to determine flow rates, well geometry, and other parameters that optimize both the electrical power production capacity and the longevity of the power generation, something not possible before.

Amitt Mehta, CEO, of AKM Enterprises Inc. shared “The attendees ranked Bill’s talk as one of the top 3 sessions which garnered a lot of interest from the drilling community members in attendance. The game changing advancements accomplished by GTI, and a highly experienced team gives it a unique edge to fast track the adoption in the coming years.”
